The Department of Education says community college borrowers are facing more trouble than ever before.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) released a new report Tuesday that found that the average loan is now $26,000, and that it has risen by $2,000 in 10 years.
In fact, in 2016, the average student loan balance was $25,000.
As you can see in the chart above, the percentage of borrowers who can make payments is now at a record low.
So, what happened?
The report notes that student loan interest rates are at a five-year low and that student loans have become a much bigger burden on the U.S. economy.
